I have run into a couple Wordpress problems over the past couple days that were solved with the venerable Google search. I am sharing those here, so maybe someone else will have a slightly easier time than I did.

First up, I was migrating a Wordpress site from our dev server to a client’s production hosting. The migration worked and I thought I took all the steps needed. The home page was loading fine but clicking any of the navigation links led to this.

Not Found

The requested URL /whatever/whatever/whatever/ was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I found a tip at Elite Eternity noting that if you don’t move over your .htaccess file you can run into this problem. This was it! I had planned on migrating the .htaccess file, but forgot to. I did so and problem solved.

Second tip, I was trying to use the Wordpress built in upgrade system on this site but it was failing. John at One Man’s Blog lets us all know that the built-in Wordpress upgrade functionality can get gunked up when there is old stuff left in the /wp-content/upgrade/ directory. That worked for me, I deleted the upgrade directory and the upgrade worked fine then.

Thanks to these fellow bloggers and their great Wordpress tips.

As a Democrat, I am ashamed that the WDN practices such petty tactics such as this and other things like carrying out a personal vendeatta in their paper through their schoolboard henchmen. I will be canceling my subscription to this rag.

http://www.winonadailynews.com/news/local/article_9d6e45be-5343-11df-a593-001cc4c03286.html?mode=comments

WTF is this guy talking about. Fact is Netflix is awesome. I don’t even get DVDs from them anymore. I pay them just for the streaming piece to my xBox360 and it is worth it. I want back content and current content on demand without a lot of fluff. Period.

There was an outage of the server that hosts this site along with several other sites and sites of Driftless clients. We suffered about 3 hours of down time today. The word from the folks at WiredTree (our server provider) about what happened is after the jump. It appears we suffered no data loss thankfully. My apologies to anyone hosted with us who’s site was down today. Unfortunately without spending some pretty significant bucks setting up a high-availability, failover system something like this is always a risk.

On February 10, 2:14pm CST, WiredTree experienced a brief, one-second outage at our data center located in CoreSite at 427 S. LaSalle in downtown Chicago. This issue effected one segment of our datacenter space and caused any servers effected to reboot.
The event occurred during a scheduled, annual UPS maintenance process that required the UPS to be transferred from normal operation to “maintenance bypass.” Preliminary indications show the main switchboard supplying power to the critical load detected an “under- frequency condition” alarm, which resulted in the ATS (automatic transfer switch) transferring back to utility power and a one-second interruption of critical power. The cause of the “under frequency condition” has been identified as a failed generator.

The generator in question has been removed for immediate, emergency maintenance. As a result, emergency power is being provided by an alternate generator at this time. All scheduled UPS maintenance has been halted until the emergency generator in question can be repaired and fully-tested, estimated by close of business tomorrow.

We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. Server uptime is as important to us as it is to you and you can rest assured that we will take every precaution to prevent this situation from happening again.

I picked up this Maple Peppercorn Mustard last night at Piggly Wiggly. I like maple, I like peppercorn, it sounded perfect for the Dagwoodesque sandwich I was preparing to build.

Upon first sample it was really good. Hit of maple, big hit of peppercorn, mustard on the backend. However upon placing it on my sandwich I found that I was not liking it as much. The sandwich was pepperoni and roast beef with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles on whole wheat. I found that it was adding a little too much bitter to the sandwich for some reason. I think if I had added a little mayo to the sandwich as well that would have helped.

I also think this would be better suited for a straight beef sandwich, grilled burgers perhaps. Or I saw a suggestion of adding it to a little heavy cream for a cream steak sauce, also sounds grand.

Final verdict 3.5 out of 5 jars.

Returned from a week in Vegas for CES 2010 as well as plain old vacation. Great time was had and the weather was great as well. probably one of the only places in the country that wasn’t frigid. Only downside of the trip was Green Bay lost so I ended the trip down.

I saw nothing mind blowing at CES. Balmer’s keynote was a big meh. Some of the xBox stuff was cool, but #1 Balmer is not Jobs, and #2 Microsoft does not have the sexy products Apple does. I really enjoyed the HigherEdTech Summit. A high point of the show for me, I was able to hear a lot of great ideas and thoughts on the future of Higher Ed as well as some of the technologies that will see penetration into Higher Ed. The show floor seemed to be full of a lot of evolutionary moves. 3D was still a big push and is still not great. I can possibly see 3D gaming catching on as gamers are used to peripherals but people are not going to sit down in droves in their living rooms and put on those glasses.

For the most part I agree with this PC World article, 9 Things I learned at CES. I am actually a fan of the living room PC, I have one and I find it more powerful than any of the tools out there now, but it is too complicated for the average user and I think it always will be. Skype built into the TV, Boxee settop box, etc, these have far more utility for the average user.

As for Vegas itself. Clearly it is slower than years past. The Sahara was a wasteland for instance. However for the consumer this means great deals, and there are still plenty of busy casinos and places. We stayed on Fremont Street, and the Golden Gate Casino in particular had a great Vegas vibe going on. Probably my favorite casino of the trip.

UPDATE: Malechite has correctly pointed out that OS X’s built in remote desktop system is based on VNC and therefore you can use any standard VNC client to get to your Mac as well.
